Essay Questions:

  1. Describe the change in the relationship between the mother country and the colonies 1700-1774.  Include major events and dates in your discussion

Many people from Great Britain and other countries in Europe began to settle in Britain’s North American colonies.

In the years 1620-0774 a lot of changes happened in these colonies. In the early years of the 18th century, people began to settle in North America leaving their mother country. They were searching for a new life style here .They wanted freedom of religion and to change their economic situation. When the European kings at that time found that North America was a big land, every one of them tried to control this land. There were wars between Britain and France over who would control the North American lands. At the end of these wars Great Britain controlled the North American lands and became the thirteen British colonies.

After the war the British faced a problem; they left 10.000 solders in the colonies. This huge number of solders was costing the British a lot of money. One solution was given by the British government; to tax the people on the daily stuff that that people use like magazines, newspaper.

This action make the people get mad; they didn’t have representation in the British Parliament, so why should they have to pay taxes? This where expression “ No taxation without representation” came from. People began protests.

A grub of Bostonians called the “Sons of the liberty” began convincing people in the 13 colonies to stop buying the British products; the product that have high taxes.

After that, a lot of people in Boston were protesting against the taxes. The British parliament decided to cancel all of the taxes except one; the tea tax.

The people didn’t like this and they keep saying “ No taxation without representation” .One night they attacked one of the British ships and dropped all of the tea in the sea. This action made the parliament send the army to control the people in Boston in 1774.

In 1775 the Bostonians began fighting the British army. This was the beginning of the American Revolution.

In 1776 the people who fought so hard and for long time won there independence, and the 13 British colonies became the United States of America.
