Collecting antiques is a leisure activity
Have you ever wondered why people collect antiques as a leisure activity? Gist and Fava (1964) define leisure as “the time which an individual has free from work or other duties and utilized for the purposes of relaxation, diversion, social achievement, or personal development." Many people find collecting antiques a pleasurable pastime. Although antiques are old, often fragile and not always practical. Additionally, can be expensive. But the value of antiques in terms of giving wisdom or pleasure can be worth more than whatever it takes to maintain it. Collecting antiques should be considered a leisure activity because of three important reasons: It creates unusual home for relaxing and entertaining ; it pleases the collectors because of interesting travels, and it broadens the collector's historical and cultural knowledge.
First, collecting antiques should be considered a leisure activity because it creates unusual home for relaxing and entertaining . Although my home is equipped with many remarkable modern things, I have seen, how early Iraqi antiques, can decorate a home in a unique way. For example, antique collectors frequently devote their energies paying special attention in their free time to the different antiques for each era such as, furniture and accessories. According to the article Ma Weidu on Collecting Chinese Antiques (2010) "As long as we find joy from the collecting process, all that we devote is worthwhile." When my mother left her job at the age of fifty six, she decided to spend her pastime to collecting antiques especially old clocks, chairs and tables. Since we live in a large home, there is plenty of space for her to express her decorative inclinations by adding or rearranging antiques and enjoying her leisure time by sitting in one antique oak wood chair. The result is a unique home environment that reflects her culturally oriented taste. Roberts (1967) explains, “The leisure sphere of life is where most people express their real personalities" (p. 75).
Second, collecting antiques should be considered a leisure activity because it pleases the collectors because of interesting travels. Dennefer (1980) argues "almost two third of the antiques collectors perceive antiques collecting primarily as fun, pleasure and extremely enjoyable." The collectors spend their free time traveling to find antiques and have leisurely conversations with interesting people, both astute dealers and other knowledgeable collectors that had chosen this hobby as their pastime. This is a wonderful way to learn about antiques and the varieties of style within different periods. Moreover, The enjoyable challenge is to find good antiques at affordable prices, the collector must often travel a lot to explore and to find a good rarity. Dennefer (1980) argues "The fun is in the challenge of locating and acquiring the objectives more than displaying them"(p. 75).
Finally, collecting antiques should be considered a leisure activity because it broadens the collector's historical and cultural knowledge. Collectors develop their knowledge in their free time about the historical value of antiques by reading about both antiques and their styles, as well as the history of the different time periods that they come from. Tomeh, A. K., Pearman, W. and Schnabel, J. (1983) states " About one-third of the respondents state that antique collecting they are also broadening their historical knowledge. Nonetheless, this interest is secondary to the primary function of antique collecting, namely leisure." The old things have a beauty, collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy their leisure time seeing and learning about the unique individual design and hand work that collectors cannot find in mass produced items such as empire, Victorian, Queen Anne and Chippendale. each antique reflects the cultural heritage for each country or the period of time. According to the article Ma Weidu on Collecting Chinese Antiques (2011) "Collecting antiques doesn’t mean gaining money. You should hold a correct attitude towards it. Wise people won’t follow others but consider the cultural value of the antiques.".
For these reasons, The choice of collecting antiques as a leisure activity can create unusual home for relaxing and entertaining and broadens the collector's historical and cultural knowledge while pleasing the collectors of interesting travels. Would you like to preserve and protect the historical, architectural and cultural heritage? Would you like spend a happy free time? Why wouldn't you consider collecting antiques as a leisure activity?
