The authors of the reading “Boston, Massachusetts: The Birth of a New Nation” (Panerton and Reid, 1993) state that the relationship between Great Britain and her thirteen Colonies in North America has changed from 1700 to 1774. In the beginning it was apparently a happy one but 1765 when the Parliament passed the Stamp Act which made the products’ price higher to finance the war. The protestation begins because the colonists wanted to be represented in order to pay taxes. They believe that only colonial assemblies are allowed to make laws for them. In addition, in 1767, the Parliament passed another law which requires that colonists had to pay import taxes on goods and once again the Sons of Liberty protest against it by organizing a Boycott. The colonist’s resentments increased and that lead to the burn of British Tax collector’s houses. In 1770 Bostonians encircled some British Soldiers who responded by killing and wounding 16 of them. This event has been called: “Bostonian Massacre” than the Sons of Liberty organized the “Tea Sea Party” which has been punished, in 1774, by the parliament by dissolving the Boston’s Assemblies and closing the port of Boston. All the others colonies supported Boston, wrote a petition to the King of England because they didn’t want to fight with Great Britain. All of these events proved that over these years the relationship between the mother law and her colonies changed from peaceful to violent.

Essay Question

Describe the change in the relationship between the mother and the colonies 1700-1774. Include major events and dates in your discussion.

The authors of the reading “Boston, Massachusetts: The Birth of a New Nation” (Connerton and Ried, 1993) claim that the relationship between the mother and the colonies changed from a friendly one to a war in 1700-1774. Because the British defeated the French in 1763, the latter had to cede their lands in North America to the former. As war is expensive, they needed money for the soldiers.  That led to a new tax called Stamp Act on goods which increased their prices in 1765. However, the Bostonians protested against it stating they didn’t have the right to tax them because they didn’t have any representation in Parliament. Two years later, Parliament came with a new tax on British goods. After that, a group of Bostonians called “Sons of Liberty” planned a boycott. Furthermore, they had the other colonies consent. In 1768, Bostonians set fire on the tax collectors’ houses; so 4,000 British soldiers were sent to Boston to protect the tax collectors. On March 5, 1770, the British soldiers killed five Bostonians and wounded six. Therefore, the resentment toward Parliament became stronger. In 1772, Parliament decided to repeal all taxes except tea tax to prove Parliament’s power on the colonies. On December 16, 1773, “Sons of Liberty” disguised as Indians, boarded three British ships and threw all tea in the water. After, other towns had their own tea parties. As a matter of fact, the port of Boston was closed in 1774. The colonies united to avoid punishment. In the end, a letter was written by the colonial assemblies in which they required the improvement of the relationship between England and the colonies; the king also learned that trade would stop until the reopening of Boston port and the restoration of Massachusetts assembly power. Finally, the friendly relationship between the mother and the colonies at the beginning did not get improved at all.

This was the first fighting of the American Revolution. On July 4, 1776, they declare themselves independent from the British. The American Revolution lasted until 1783.

The authors of the reading « Boston, Massachusetts: Birth of a New Nation » (Connerton and Reid, 1993) say that in the 1700s, the relationship between the mother country and the colonies changed a lot. At the beginning, the relationship seemed friendly but progressively, it began to decrease. It started when the Parliament needed money for the war; it taxed the colonists by adding stamps on their goods. The colonists didn’t agree with this law because they weren’t represented by the Parliament. Also, in 1767, the colonists had to pay import taxes on most of the British goods. That is why the « Sons of Liberty » planned a boycott with all of the 13 colonies to stop buying British imports. Moreover, in 1770, the « Boston Massacre » happened. British soldiers killed 5 citizens and wounded 6 others; they were in Boston to protect the homes of British tax collectors that the Bostonians set on fire in 1768. Furthermore, the Parliament decided to repeal all of the import taxes except the tea. That decision created the « Boston Tea Party »: the colonies threw all the import tea in the water. Finally, after all these major events, in 1775, the British troops fought against Bostonians and then, on July 4th, 1776, the 13 colonies became independents and a new nation was born, the United States.

The author of the reading “Boston, Massachusetts: the birth of a new nation” (Connerton and Reid, 1993) claims that the relationship between mother country, England and the colonies in North America changed from a cordial one to a war. In 1700s, the relationship between the mother country and the colonies were friendly. Great Britain seemed to control colonial trade with no trouble. The relationship kept going well until 1765 when Parliament passed the Stamp Act in order to pay the British soldiers that protected the new territory gained after winning the war against France in 1763. Bostonians protested against taxation without representation. The relationship started to grow bad when, in 1767, the sons of Liberty organized a boycott as a result of the import taxes led by Parliament. And then, in 1768, Bostonians protestations kept on and the Homes’ British tax collectors were burned. That led to the Boston massacre and then the relationship got worse. After the Sons of Liberty made the Tea Party, the deterioration of the relationship between Great Britain and the colonies got to its highest point. Therefore, the first fighting American Revolution began after the mother country made the punishment of Boston in 1774 as a result of the Tea Party. All those events led to the separation between the mother country and the colonies and the end of the colonial period.

The authors of the ``Boston, Massachusetts: The Birth of a new Nation (Connerton and Reid, 1993) claim the relationship between the mother country England and the colonies in North America changed from a good one to a conflict in 1700-1774. As the years passed and the relation was deteriorate. Firstly, the mother country have require money from the colonies because she need money for protect her new territory. In 1765, the British create the Stamp Act that increases the price of the newspapers, magazines, and legal papers in the colonies but the colonies aren’t very happy about this kind of taxes and they manifest. Secondly, the British pass another law, in 1767 that the colonies must to pay import taxes on British goods. For another time, the colonies doesn’t like that and they protest with the slogan ``no taxation without representation``. Finally, in 1772, the mother country decides to repeal all of the import taxes, except the tea taxes. The colonies are not very happy and they refuse to buy or to sell the tea in their store. For these three reasons, the relationship between the British and his colonies are just deteriorating during the century and, after a few years, they cut all their links.
